Getting Started

This guide takes you from nothing installed to talking with a friend on your own Kunuleco node.

The Journey

  1. Installation. Get Urchin and its node running on your machine
  2. Your First Identity. Create the account that owns your node, and learn the first commands
  3. Your First Place. Find your way around your HOME and make a room
  4. Your First Hall. Found a place for a group and decide who gets in
  5. Your First Invitation. Bring someone in
  6. What Just Happened. Understand the pieces

Before You Begin

You'll need:

  • A computer running Windows 10 or later, Linux (Ubuntu 22.04 or later), or macOS 12 or later. macOS support is experimental.
  • Alpha access. The downloads are open to alpha testers, and your welcome note has the link.
  • An internet connection to reach friends elsewhere. A friend on the same network needs none.
  • About 500 MB of free disk space and 15 minutes

No programming is required. You use Kunuleco through the Urchin client, which has buttons and menus as well as a terminal where you type commands.

Two ways to use a node

Most people use Urchin, the graphical client, with its guided sign-up and tour. If you prefer a terminal, an SSH client can connect to a node and use the same commands. Urchin's own commands, the ones that start with / such as the update commands, exist only in Urchin. One account can be signed in only once at a time, so quit Urchin before you sign in over SSH as the same person. These pages show the Urchin path.

What You'll Have at the End

  • An account on your own node, which you own
  • A room of your own inside your HOME
  • A Hall, with you as its Steward
  • A friend connected to you, and a way to talk

Kunuleco is alpha software. Expect rough edges, and do not use it for anything sensitive yet.
